AI-based narration has quickly become a natural part of producing digital training. It is used for everything from training films and interactive scenarios to instructions, simulations and reading longer texts aloud.
Quality has improved rapidly, and today’s AI voices are in many cases hard to distinguish from human voices. At the same time, there are still situations where a professional narrator is the best choice. The key is therefore not to choose one solution or the other, but to choose the right narration based on the purpose of the training.
Options for narration
AI-based narration
A finished script is turned into natural speech with the help of AI. The voices can often be adjusted in terms of pace, emphasis, pauses and pronunciation, which makes production both fast and flexible.
Professional narrator
An experienced narrator records the script in a studio and the audio is processed by a sound engineer. That gives maximum control over expression, feeling and tone.
Record it yourself
Use your own organisation’s narrator and record the audio with your own equipment. The audio files are then edited and processed before they are used in the training.
AI-based narration
Developments in AI voices have moved very quickly in recent years. Today there are several services that offer natural speech with high audio quality in a large number of languages.
The workflow is simple. The script is written or pasted in, then voice and language are selected before the audio file is generated. In most services you can also control pronunciation, emphasis, pauses and emotional expression to create a more lively result.
Quality still varies between different languages and voices. English often holds a somewhat higher quality than smaller languages, but Swedish AI voices have also developed very quickly. Our recommendation is therefore always to sample several options before you decide.
For many training programmes, AI is today the natural first choice because production is considerably faster and the cost is significantly lower than with traditional studio production.
Professional narrator
When the narration is an important part of the experience, a professional narrator can still be the best option. That applies, for example, to brand films, leadership communication or training where tone of voice, presence and feeling matter a great deal.
A professional production normally means recording in a studio and post-processing by a sound engineer who ensures even audio levels, high technical quality and a professional end result.
The cost is higher than for AI-generated voices, but the investment can be justified when the narration is a central part of the experience.
Record it yourself
Creating a professional audio production is considerably more advanced than many people think. A good microphone is only a small part of the whole. The result is also affected by the recording environment, microphone technique and the post-processing done in the form of noise reduction, level adjustment and mastering.
If you have experience of audio production, this can be a good option. For most organisations, however, it means a greater effort while the result rarely reaches the same quality as modern AI voices or a professional studio production.
Our advice
There is no longer an obvious answer that fits every project.
For many digital training programmes, AI-based narration today offers the best combination of quality, flexibility and cost-effectiveness. When the narration is instead an important part of the experience or the brand, a professional narrator is often worth the investment.
Regardless of which solution you choose, the script is the most important quality factor. A carefully crafted text with natural language and a clear structure makes a considerably greater difference than the choice between different voices.
