Interactive video turns passive watching into measurable decisions

Film is one of the most engaging formats for digital training, but also one of the most passive. It is possible to watch an entire training film without really remembering very much, because the brain never needs to make any decisions of its own. Interactive video changes that. The film pauses, the participant makes a choice and the story continues based on the decision.

What interactive video is

Interactive video combines film with active moments. The participant can choose how the story continues through branching, click objects for deeper information or answer questions directly in the video timeline. Instead of being a passive viewer, the person becomes an active participant who shapes the experience.

Why it works pedagogically

When the participant needs to think, take a position and act, the chance of putting knowledge into practice increases. An active choice creates engagement, and the immediate consequence gives clear feedback. Because it is possible to try different paths in a safe environment, interactive video is especially well suited to scenario exercises where decisions and consequences are in focus. To get a fair picture of the effect, the training should be followed up based on which decisions are made, how well the content is understood and how the knowledge is used afterwards.

Example: the difficult customer conversation

A filmed dialogue shows a meeting where the customer presses on price and threatens to choose a competitor. The film pauses and the participant needs to make a decision. Should you give a discount straight away, ask a counter-question or raise the value of the offer? The choice determines how the conversation develops and the participant gets to see the consequences immediately through the customer's reaction and the continued dialogue. A less good choice is not a failure, but an opportunity to learn in a situation where no real consequences arise.

Every choice is a data point

When interactive video is combined with xAPI, every decision becomes a valuable data point. If a majority of salespeople, for example, choose to give a discount straight away, it becomes clear which behaviours the next sales training should focus on. The training thus becomes more than a completed activity. It gives concrete insights into how the organisation thinks and acts in practice.

Honest about production

Interactive video requires more planning than traditional film. Every branch means more scenes to produce, and the number grows quickly if the structure becomes too complex. It is therefore often wise to keep the branches short, show the consequence of the choice and then lead back to the main path. Not everything needs to be interactive either. In many cases it is enough to add questions or reflection stops in the video timeline to break the passivity. A linear film still has a clear place, especially when the purpose is to convey emotion or inspire.

We help with the whole process, from script and scenario design to filming or code-generated film and the measurement that shows how participants actually act — in your authoring tool or in our own, Create. Get in touch if you want to see a concrete example.
